About Mt. Moriah Baptist Church
A Legacy of Faith and Service
For over a century, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church has been a spiritual pillar in the Jenkinsville community of Fairfield County, South Carolina. Since its founding in 1883, the church has nurtured generations of believers, guided by its mission of faith, unity, and service through Jesus Christ.
Founding and Early Years
Established in 1883, Mt. Moriah began under the leadership of devoted pastors including Rev. Dennis, Rev. Bookhard, Rev. Brown, Rev. Harold, and Rev. Rufus Bell. A pivotal moment in the church’s early history occurred when the original sanctuary was destroyed by fire during Rev. Bell’s tenure. Despite this tragedy, reconstruction efforts began swiftly, and worship resumed in the newly built sanctuary. Rev. Bell served faithfully until his passing in November 1977.
Growth and Ministry Development
In 1978, Rev. John Griffin was appointed pastor. His leadership marked a period of organizational growth with the establishment of ministries such as the Gospel Choir, Missionary Society, Program Committee, Floral Committee, Pulpit Aide, and Usher Board.
Rev. Willie Roberson followed, serving from 1986 to 1989. He was succeeded by Rev. Hedrick Galloway, whose leadership (1989–1998) brought substantial developments including the Deaconess Board, a children’s choir, and a tutorial program. Facility improvements during this period included enclosing the church front, paving the yard, installing new windows, and upgrading the PA system.
A New Century of Ministry
Rev. Benny Colley briefly served as interim pastor before being installed permanently. His nine-year tenure was marked by strong biblical teaching, spiritual enrichment, and physical expansion—including the addition of a fellowship hall.
In 2008, Rev. James D. Lee was called to shepherd Mt. Moriah. Under his leadership, numerous ministries were established, including the Activity Committee, Golf Ministry, Men’s Choir, Youth Choir, Intercessory Prayer Group, Support Group, and Praise Dancers. Technological upgrades included a video recording system and television monitors. A major milestone was reached when the church paid off a 30-year mortgage in just 11 years. Pastor Lee also appointed the first female trustees in church history. He resigned in 2021.
Recent Leadership
From 2021 to 2024, Rev. Freddie Smith led the congregation. In July 2024, Rev. James D. Lee returned as interim pastor, continuing to provide stability and leadership.
Present Day
As of April 2025, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church enters a new chapter under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Willie Outlaw, Pastor. With a rich legacy behind it and a renewed vision ahead, Mt. Moriah remains committed to being a beacon of hope and faith for the Jenkinsville community and beyond.
